This photo shows an eastward view of North Main St. in White River Junction
from 1956.
Notice the traffic pattern that's quite different from the current one-way
route.
Note also the gas station in the far center of the photo. This is currently
a parking lot across from the Coolidge.

The MCS back playground project is now complete! This week I enjoyed bringing
each class out to the new space to learn about the equipment and share the
expectations for playground behavior. The kids are beyond excited to play in
the newly remodeled space starting next week. On behalf of the MCS students
and staff, I would like to thank the Norwich community for supporting this
project. We now have a fully inclusive, and amazingly fun playground for kids
to utilize. Appreciation also to Business Manager Jamie Teague, Facilities
Director Tony Daigle, and their team for managing and helping to construct
this project. I hope you are able to take a walk or drive up Girard Way to
view…and possibly play…on the new playground.
With appreciation,
Shawn Gonyaw, MCS Principal

Message From The Principal
Chubby Muffin Visits Our School!
Yesterday, our students had the exciting opportunity to meet Chubby Muffin, our newly named plow truck, as part of the 2024 Name a Plow Program! The truck and its friendly driver, Ryan, arrived on Girard Way yesterday morning for a special celebration of Vermont Plow Day, and it was a blast for everyone involved.
The students had a fantastic time not only meeting Chubby Muffin but also learning about plowing and winter maintenance. It was especially fun for the kids to see the truck up close, ask Ryan questions, and take photos with the truck and its official name sign. The excitement was contagious as everyone got involved in celebrating our school’s new “plow partner!”
Voting for the name was a highlight for many students, with so many creative and fun suggestions to choose from. In the end, Chubby Muffin took the crown, but there were lots of other great contenders, including:
Elsa
Snow Crush
Snow Pup
Snowy the Snow Plow
Obi-Wan Ke-Snow-Bi
Chancellor Plowpatine
Pepto Bismol
We’re thrilled to share that we’ve created a short video of Chubby Muffin’s visit, capturing all the fun moments from the day. You can watch the video by following the link below or by visiting our school website.
A big thank you to our students for their creativity and enthusiasm. It was a wonderful opportunity to not only meet Ryan and Chubby Muffin, but to learn more about the important work Vermont’s plow operators do to keep our roads safe in winter.

Student Services Update
Pre-K Applications are Open
Marion Cross School has two, publicly funded Pre-K classrooms run by an amazing team of educators. Applications for Pre-K at the Marion Cross School for the 2025-26 school year are open and will remain open until February 2nd 2025.
Families that should apply:
1. Any family that has a Pre-K student minimum age of 3 by September 30th 2025. Note - students must be three to attend MCS pre-K.
2. Families who enroll are expected to attend our full day program according to the Marion Cross School calendar. We do not have space for part-time enrollment.
The Pre-K Application takes less than five minutes to complete and can be completed online. There is also more information on the Pre-K program on our website.
Even if your students are not enrolled in Marion Cross School’s full day Pre-K program, your family can receive financial support, through Vermont's Universal Pre-K (Act 166). This requires Norwich School District to fund up to ten hours of pre-kindergarten education to Norwich residents. Families can choose from pre-qualified providers, including private and public programs.
If you would like a hard copy of our application or need any other questions answered, please contact me (gregbagnato@hanovernorwichschools.org).
Have a great long weekend,
Greg
Counselor's Corner
Welcome to another exciting week of Class Counsel with Ms. Keel! We’ve been busy learning and growing together, and I can’t wait to share all the wonderful things happening in our classes. Let’s dive right in!
Last week
What a fantastic week we had! In Mrs. Freeman's Kindergarten class, we continued with the Incredible Flexible You series as we focused on Body in The Group. Meanwhile, Miss Anderson's class kicked off their Bullying Prevention lessons, setting a strong foundation for our young learners.
In First Grade, we’ve been practicing how to refuse bullying and using our strong, respectful voices. Second Graders completed their Bullying Prevention unit, while Third Graders finished the series Weird! Dare! Tough! and are now putting the finishing touches on their Bullying Prevention lessons. In Fifth Grade, students explored a Scholastic News edition on bullying and started wrapping up their Bullying Prevention unit. Finally, our Sixth Graders completed their lesson on monitoring progress on their goals. What a week of learning and growth!
Next week
Looking ahead, we have some exciting topics lined up! In Kindergarten, we will be learning about recognizing bullying. In First Grade, we’ll review the 3 R's (Recognize, Report, Refuse) and discuss the role of bystanders in bullying situations. For our Second and Fifth Graders, we will be starting The Committee for Children's Child Protection unit. A letter will be sent home with your child next week, so keep an eye out! You can also check out the Personal Safety Letter for grades K-5 here.
Things to remember
As we continue our journey, please remember to encourage your child to share what they’ve learned about bullying prevention and personal safety. Open conversations at home can reinforce these important lessons and help our students feel supported.
Until next time!
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child's education! Together, we are making a difference in their lives. Let’s keep the momentum going and have another amazing week ahead!
Warm regards,
Ms. Keel
School News and Information
Hello from Math World,
We are 1 week away from the second annual MCS Family Math Night, which will be held on Thursday, November 14 from 5:30-6:30pm in the MCS gym. We are excited for this year's event, and hope that many MCS families will be able to attend. Math Night is a time for families to come together, explore some of the games and activities we use here at school to reinforce concepts being taught in the classroom, and to have a fun time celebrating all things math related!
We are lucky to be partnering with the Dartmouth Math Department this year as well as the MCS PTO. With their support, we are able to provide pizza, drinks and mini whoopie pies for all who attend! We will also be holding a raffle for students to be randomly selected for various math related prizes!
We hope that many of you can attend, and look forward to seeing you next week!
