A Reminder About Timely Arrival and Morning Opportunities
First, I want to wish each of you a wonderful week with your children. I will miss seeing their smiles and engaging in joyful conversations with them. MCS students really are the BEST! Special thanks to those of you who so kindly and generously sent treats in for the Staff Appreciation Brunch. Thank you PTO for organizing a tasty treat to send us all off on vacation.
When we return from break, we are setting a goal for 100% of students to arrive at school on time or before the start of the school day. School begins promptly at 8:05 AM, and students should be lined up in their designated spots, ready for their teachers to pick them up at this time. We kindly ask for your support in helping your child arrive on time, ensuring they can fully participate in the day’s activities and start their learning on a positive note. Did you know that for the past two weeks, we have averaged 42 late students each morning? Most of these students arrive between 8:10 and 8:40 AM. Please know that I am ALWAYS happy to see your students, but am delighted to see them arrive on time.
Research indicates that arriving on time is crucial for both academic success and social development. Students who arrive on time are more likely to participate in morning routines that foster a sense of community and belonging, which is key to their emotional and social growth. Additionally, punctuality allows students to benefit from the full instructional time, leading to stronger academic performance and better classroom engagement. Consistently arriving on time sets a positive tone for the day and supports long-term achievement.
Any student is welcome to have breakfast between 7:45 and 8:05 each morning. It is always better to come on the earlier side as we discourage students from bringing breakfast back to their classrooms. In addition to breakfast, we offer several exciting morning opportunities:
Open Library Time: Fifth and sixth graders are welcome to attend open library time, where they can read or work on school projects.
Band Lessons: Band students will have their lessons.
Guidance Counseling: Students can arrange to meet with our guidance counselor, Ms. Keel, for a chat or support.
Morning Recess: MCS staff are out on the front playground starting at 7:45 AM ready to welcome students to morning recess.
We also want to highlight the importance of our morning meetings, a key component of the Responsive Classroom approach. These meetings are designed to build a strong sense of community and set children up for social and academic success. When students arrive after the meeting has begun, it can be challenging for them to integrate into the group, potentially affecting their sense of belonging and the overall classroom dynamic.
We appreciate your continued partnership in helping our students get the most out of each school day by arriving on time. Thank you for your support in making this a successful start to the next section of the school year. If you are having trouble getting your children to school on time and need our support, please reach out. We are more than happy to brainstorm with you about how to make the morning times easier!
Happy Vacation!
Shawn
Student Services Update
Happy Friday,
Our February break seems to come at a pretty good time.
School has felt a little fragmented due to a snow day each of the past two weeks. Furthermore, I know all of us have been either sick or fending off sickness and I am hopeful that a week away will restore everyone.
Today is also Valentine’s Day! It is truly amazing to see so many students excited to make and share cards with their classmates and also with many folks outside their homerooms. I have had several students find me in my office and illustrate true happiness in giving their creations to me and other adults. They really want everyone to feel that they belong. Even adults can appreciate that!
Have a great break,
Greg
Counselor's Corner
Welcome to another exciting week in Class Counsel with Ms. Keel! We’ve been busy learning and growing together, and I can’t wait to share all the wonderful things happening in our classes. Let’s dive right in!
Last week
In Kindergarten, we wrapped up our Child Protection Unit by reviewing all the important safety rules we’ve learned over the past two months. The students applied these rules to a story about a little girl named Julie, who demonstrates how to keep herself safe.
In Second and Third Grades, we also completed our Child Protection Unit. The students reviewed the safety rules and applied them to a story about a boy named David, who helps keep himself and his friends safe. Great job, everyone!
In Fifth and Sixth Grades, our students will be singing "Stick Season" by Noah Kahan in chorus. Mr. Ramsay asked me to discuss some of the lyrics with the students, particularly those that mention using drugs and alcohol to cope. We had meaningful conversations about coping strategies and explored healthier alternatives. Some students even came up with their own lyrics to replace the drug/alcohol references in the song.
After the break
We have some exciting topics lined up!
Kindergarten will start exploring feelings and learn about the Zones of Regulation.
First and Second Grades will wrap up their Safety unit and also dive into the Zones of Regulation.
Third Grade will explore where feelings and emotions come from, how to manage strong feelings, and review the Zones of Regulation.
In Fifth Grade, we will kick off our Health Unit focusing on puberty and hygiene. Be sure to check out the parent/caregiver letter that was sent home!
Sixth Grade will be nearing the end of our Bullying Prevention Unit.
Things to remember
As we move forward, please remember to encourage your child to share what they’ve learned about safety and emotions. Open conversations at home can reinforce these important lessons!
Until next time!
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our class activities! I’m looking forward to another fantastic week of learning and growth after the break.
Warm regards,
Ms. Keel

MCS Hosts HHS Jazz Band
On Monday morning we had a special treat – a visit from Mr. Gollub and the Hanover High Jazz Band! Our 6th grade band members performed Duke Ellington’s C Jam Blues with them, too! I hope it helped inspire your youngster to continue on their instrument next year … or gave them a great idea for what they want to play in 5th grade.
PE News
Yesterday’s snow day caused us to miss out on our kickoff assembly for the MCS / American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge. So, we’re going to just jump right in! Please review the information below to sign up and to gain access to some important heart healthy activities.

Our school is participating in this year's American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge!
Students and staff are excited to care for their hearts and minds, help kids with special hearts and learn the lifesaving skill Hands-Only CPR!
Did you know that 70% of all cardiac arrests happen at home? We challenge you to ask your closest family and friends if they would know what to do if you went into cardiac arrest. Now think about our entire community.
With EMS response times averaging 13 minutes, we want everyone to be prepared to help save a life in a cardiac emergency. You can help by completing Finn’s Mission tonight! Just follow the steps below to join our Nation of Lifesavers!
If 50% of our students register for this year's Kids Heart Challenge, our
school will receive $500 to spend on new PE equipment!
