Good morning Norwich,
In this edition of the Marion Cross School Newsletter there is a plea for help in finding suitable substitute teachers to assist the teachers and staff at the school. I have copied that portion of the newsletter here in hopes of answering any questions prospective candidates may have.
Can you help by becoming a substitute??
Some of you expressed interest in being on the substitute list. There were some questions that came up that are relevant to anyone with interest.
Do I have to apply to be a substitute? Yes, there is an online form that needs to be filled out to get on the substitute list. This link will take you to the online application.
If I am already a volunteer, is the process quicker? Yes, if you have gone through the background check, that speeds up the process.
Do I need to have a formal interview? Yes, typically a 15 minute conversation with the HR department over Zoom is all that is required.
Can I decide which grades and/or teachers I substitute for? Yes, you can select the days you are available and the teachers you substitute for.
What if I need several days advance notice to adjust my schedule in order to substitute? That works just fine for us. Oftentimes, teachers know about appointments or professional development days weeks in advance. Once part of our system, you can be alerted about substitute opportunities that are several days or even weeks in the future.
And now here is this weeks newsletter:

Message From The Principal
What an amazing week we had at MCS. The energy level was high in preparation of welcoming you to the winter concerts. I would like to extend a huge thank you for attending the concerts…and for being fantastic audience members. With any luck, you enjoyed the show as much as I did.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our talented music teacher, Travis Ramsey. For those of you who attended one or both of our concerts, it is easy to deduce from watching Mr. Ramsey that he is in his element. Mr. Ramsey spends countless hours working with students to help them feel prepared and excited about performing. As I watched students on the risers sharing their love of music with our guests, it was evident that he accomplished this goal!
Now we can all eagerly await the spring concerts.
Have a lovely weekend,
Shawn

Climate Survey Results
This week I spent time looking at our Climate Survey Results. One of our school-wide goals is that “we build and nurture a healthy school community”.
The Climate Survey for School Personnel (teachers and staff) showed improvement in every category (staff connectedness, structure for learning, school safety, physical environment, adult relationships, and parental involvement). The overall score increased from a 3.32 to a 3.47 last fall to this fall with 3 being somewhat agree and 4 being strongly agree.
The Climate Survey for Families also showed improvement in every category (teaching and learning, school safety, interpersonal relationships, institutional environment, and parental environment). The overall score increased from a 3.38 to a 3.53 last fall to this fall with 3 being somewhat agree and 4 being strongly agree.
The Climate Survey for Elementary (grades 3-6 only) results are compared to the overall state (22 elementary schools) and last year’s results below. I am sharing the state’s two highest scores and two lowest scores.
We will discuss all these results as grade level teams and as staff in order to progress further on our school-wide goal.
Have a great weekend!

Counselor's Corner
This week in PreK we learned about and practiced using self-talk to help focus and pay attention, as well as asking for what you need and want respectfully. In Kindergarten through Third grades we are coming to the end of our Zones of Regulation unit where we have been exploring all varieties of emotions, as well as tools/strategies to help regulate our brains and bodies. In Fourth and Fifth grade we are just starting our unit on Emotion Regulation through Second Step and have started to explore what happens inside our brains and bodies as we start to experience strong emotions. In Sixth grade we learned about how to recognize bullying and ways to stand up and help stop bullying online.

Support the Friends of Hanover-Norwich Schools
For more than 60 years the Friends of Hanover-Norwich Schools has provided grants to enrich the curriculum of our four public schools. Gifts from community members make this work possible. Earlier this year, the Friends voted to: support a collaborative poetry curriculum and recitation night to create a bond between rising seventh graders at Marion Cross School and Richmond Middle School; underwrite expansion of the Solar Eclipse Ballooning project at Hanover High School to include more students; facilitate access to an online library for all students at Marion Cross School; and purchase technology to upgrade science laboratories and English classrooms in both elementary schools, pilot a digital photography elective in the middle school, and bring art history alive in the high school. Please consider a donation to the Friends during this season of gratitude and giving back. Please give online or mail your contribution to:
PO Box 882, Hanover, NH 03755
Checks should be made payable to The Friends of Hanover-Norwich Schools (FHNS).
Thank you!

Morning Drop Off
Please remember, that only quick drops should utilize the Church Street lot. We’ve noticed parents getting out of their vehicles and some leaving their cars in non-parking spaces. This has been causing dangerous situations for other vehicles and some students. There are plenty of spots to park around the Green if you would like to walk your child to the door. Thanks for your cooperation.
