Dan & Whit's at 70 Exhibit, Opening Reception and Party
Over 200 people gathered to celebrate Dan & Whit's at 70 last month. It was a great party! Senator Welch and Margaret Cheney offered congratulations and presented the Frasers with a copy of his congratulatory speech that was submitted to the Congressional Record. We all sang "Happy Birthday" and we all had the chance to share memories, some of which ended up on the walls of the exhibit.
Thank you to Amy Redpath, Coldwell Banker Realtor, for sponsoring the project, to the Norwich Inn for donating and serving the beer, Betsy Eccles for catering the beautiful food, and to The Flames for the tunes!
Revolution in the Cemetery
Our Revolution in the Cemetery Tour in Fairview Cemetery was the day after the big party. We visited the graves of six Revolutionary War soldiers and told related Norwich's experiences in the war through their stories. We had some big questions....for instance: When does a political action become something you must stand up to no matter how it might impact you or your family?
We'll be offering this tour again in October as we found many questions and connections to today.

Or visit a beautiful stand of maples on a 2-hour hike. Or take the Women's History stroll on Main Street. Or head off on a hike to cellar holes. There will be some after-school hikes for kids, too.
Norwich's natural and cultural landscape is something special. This is your chance to get out with experts in their fields to learn more about Norwich's special places.

A Strong Start to the School Year
Dear Families,
What a wonderful first week we have had at Marion Cross School! Students returned well-rested, eager to learn, and full of energy. Each morning the playground has been alive with excitement as families gather to drop off children and connect with one another—building community right from the start of the day.
Inside the school, classrooms are busy with students reviewing school-wide expectations and establishing their own class routines. Many classes have also taken their learning outdoors, exploring our campus and beginning to identify special places in the Norwich Town Forest where they will return for learning throughout the year.
The feeling in the building is both positive and joyful. Our custodial staff deserves special thanks for working tirelessly to make the school shine—students and staff walked into a building that was clean, bright, and welcoming. We also had an outstanding turnout at our Open House. It was heartening to see so many families filling our halls, excited to meet teachers and celebrate the beginning of a new school year together.
Attendance Matters
We’ve set a goal this year for every student to be on time and present every day—and we’re off to an amazing start! Attendance for the first three days has been at 97% present, with tardies at less than 5% each day. That is truly impressive—thank you for supporting your child’s learning by making school attendance a priority.
A Few Requests
To keep our school community safe and welcoming for all, we ask for your help with a few items:
Dogs at Drop-Off: We love seeing our friendly canine visitors! Please be sure to clean up after your dog if they need to relieve themselves, as we had a few kindergarten friends step in dog poop this week. Also, dogs should not enter the fenced-in playground area.
Playground Fence: Some families have asked about the fence around the smaller playground. PreK programs follow special regulations requiring a set amount of fenced-in space for their play. This fence ensures our PreK students can learn and play safely while meeting state guidelines.
Dismissal Time Use: During dismissal (until 3:30), we ask that families let us use the fenced-in playground space for a smooth and safe transition at the end of the day. After 3:30, families are welcome to use and enjoy the space as long as they’d like.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thank you for the many ways you support Marion Cross School—we are off to a fantastic year together!
Looking forward to a wonderful school year!
Shawn
Student Services Update
Dear Marion Cross School Families,
Since 2022, Vermont has successfully implemented Universal School Meals. This program enables schools to offer free breakfast and lunch to all students, regardless of household income.
However, all Vermont schools still need to gather household income data. This data enables Vermont to access the maximum possible dollars for school meals, thereby reducing the burden on Vermont taxpayers.
Household income data is needed to ensure that millions of federal education dollars continue to flow to Vermont to support educational benefits and to ensure that these funds are fairly distributed across the state.
We hope that every family in our school community will fill out the 2025-26 Household Income Form to help create a more equitable future for all Vermont students. Even if you didn’t fill out these forms in the past, doing so now will help Vermont maintain an affordable Universal School Meals program and continue to receive millions in essential federal education dollars.
Please complete the Household Income Form for your household. This form should take only a few minutes to complete. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.
Thank you
Greg Bagnato

Calling all Piano Players!
Welcome to a new year, everyone! I am so excited to hear all our MCS kids making such amazing music. I am especially excited to put together Rep programs for this year – one of the highlights of the week for me!
If there is a young musician in your family who plays piano, please invite them to schedule a performance in a special “Piano Rep!” On October 16 at 2:30 pm, we will dedicate our Rep performance to the wonderful and versatile piano.
Families and friends are always invited to Rep, which takes place most Thursdays from 2:30-3:00. Please have your child talk to me about signing up for Rep!
Thanks,
Travis Ramsey

Calling all Volunteers!
Interested in helping with health screenings? Want to help out with Forest Fridays? Not sure of your availability but are still interested in hearing about upcoming volunteer opportunities? Please take a minute to fill out our annual intake form - by doing so we are able to streamline our volunteer program and let you know of opportunities that speak to your strengths and interests.
From the MCS Library:
We’re kicking off the school year with our annual Community Read Program! Earlier this week, your youngest MCS student brought home a family copy of this year’s book, The Next Scientist by Kate Messner. As a family, we invite you to read and discuss this collection of real life stories of the diverse paths people have taken into the sciences. On October 8 we will celebrate The Next Scientist with a school-wide celebration, featuring 6th grade led cross-grade discussions, hands-on activities, and guest presentations. But the fun doesn't stop there! We are also working to bring scientists from our amazing community into MCS classrooms throughout the year to share their own inspiring stories. Be on the lookout for how you or someone you know can participate. Let’s spark curiosity and imagine the future—one scientist at a time!
PTO Bulletin Board
The MCS Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) would like to welcome your family to the 2025-2026 school year! The PTO focuses on bringing the MCS community together to enrich student education. Throughout the year, the PTO organizes and supports a variety of school programs and special events. We were very happy that so many families joined us for Popsicles on the Playground and the Welcome Back Coffee and Snacks this week.
You will receive a PTO-focused email next week with more information, including how you can be involved this year. For now, here are some upcoming events:
Welcome to Pre-K and Kindergarten Potluck Parties
The PTO and the Norwich Recreation Department will co-sponsor welcome potluck party events for the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students and their families at the Huntley Meadow Pavilion. This is a wonderful opportunity for kids to get to know their classmates and for parents and caregivers to connect at the beginning of the school year. Siblings are welcome to join. Both events will be potluck style.
Kindergarten Potluck on Monday, 9/1 - 4:30 pm:
Please sign up here to bring a dish to share! If you have trouble accessing the sign-up sheet or have questions, feel free to email Carolyn Weiss (carolyn.weiss@gmail.com).
Pre-K Potluck Party on Sunday, 9/7 - 11:00 am to 1:00 pm::
Please sign up here to bring a dish to share! If you have trouble accessing the sign-up sheet or have questions, feel free to email Aime Mason (aime.schwartz@gmail.com).
First PTO Meeting of the Year - Friday, 9/19 - 8:15 to 9:15 am
The PTO holds meetings throughout the school year. All parents, caregivers, and MCS staff are welcome and encouraged to attend! Our first meeting of the year will take place on Friday, September 19, from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. We will be alternating morning and evening meetings this school year to accommodate more families.
Please reach out to the PTO Team at marioncrosspto@gmail.com with any questions, ideas, etc.
Classroom Representatives Needed!
The MCS community thrives thanks to the partnership between caregivers, parents, teachers and staff. An essential piece of that is the role of Classroom Representatives (Class Reps). It’s an easy and rewarding way to contribute to your child’s school year experience.
