Good morning Norwich and Upper Valley readers:
Did you Know that:
The Norwich Racket Club and Tennis is open for the season despite a nasty windstorm.
Here is there website for more information http://www.norwichracquetclub.org/
This story is about the work efforts from the member volunteers that make it possible and help to keep member rates low.
It was a cold, but not too blustery, Sunday morning last week on April 27. A hearty volunteer crew from the Norwich Racket Club (NRC) descended upon the tennis courts behind Fogg’s Lumber and Hardware to prepare them for the opening season.
Neil Roth of Hanover on his way and ready to set up the pavilion with tables and chairs. As you can see in this photo there are several members assisting and each has an assigned task if you will.
The Norwich Racquet Club maintains two clay courts and two paddle tennis courts for about 130 year round members from around the Upper Valley, many of whom often help with tasks to maintain the club’s facilities and get them ready for opening of the tennis courts each spring.
These efforts and strong sense of volunteerism by the members helps keep the annual dues at the club low and affordable.
Mark Perkins of Woodstock and Jimmy Petrillo of Thetford discuss the setup of the tennis courts.
This involves putting out the nets and rollers, weeding, cleaning and furnishing the outdoor pavilion as well as affixing the wind screens.
Julia Korkus of Norwich and Christine Kerr of White River Junction help with weeding and raking.

Later that Evening….
The damage was caused by the 50 Mph + winds that happened in the Upper Valley.
All hell broke loose with wind gusts likely in excess of 50 MPH.
Despite the setback, the club’s Board was quick to survey the damage, is getting
estimates for repairs and scheduling them so the season won’t be delayed. There
was even a discussion of temporarily employing some labradors to retrieve
wayward tennis balls until the fences are fixed. ;-)
